THE Consortium Project Wins SBC Award

THE Consortium project has received national recognition from the SBC Foundation, the parent company of Ameritech, for innovative use of partnerships, technology, and education. Over 70 applications were submitted to the SBC Foundation in this regional competition, and THE Consortium was one of 18 chosen to receive the award. According to SBC, awards are given to programs that have "facilitated the integration of telecommunications technology into education, resulting in improved student achievement and success."

Criteria for winning an SBC award included:

  • History of the partnership and the population it serves
  • Program's ability to make technology accessible to underserved populations
  • Explanation of how the program would reach its goals and objectives
  • Description of how technology would be implemented in the program
  • Ability of program to produce measurable results and to evaluate the outcome of the partnership

On March 6, 2002, James A. Scott, Jr., project director of THE Consortium, attended a congressional reception in Washington D.C. with Congresswoman Deborah Pryce, where the project was formally recognized. James' parents also attended to help celebrate the event.

SBC Congressional Reception: Congresswoman Pryce, Dr. James Scott, and his parents. It is exciting to know that THE Consortium will continue to serve as a catalyst for change. As a winner of the SBC award, THE Consortium staff will have the opportunity to share their expertise by serving as "virtual" advisors via the Internet with other partnerships.
