Now we promised you that we would re-visit Christian. First, were going to show the original story, then youll see an update. What for the changes in Christians behavior. Marcia Murchison: What do you want? Christian: Play at home. Marcia Murchison: You want to play at your house? Christian: Yes. Marcia Murchison: But youre all by yourself at your house, you dont have any friends to play with. Christian: I dont wanna play here. Marcia Murchison: You dont want to play at school? Christian: No. Marcia Murchison: He would say he wants to see his mom; he wants to be with his mom, he wants to be with his mom. And my reaction to that is to say I know you want to be with your mom, but this is school time, and were going to stay at school today. And were going to be here and play with your friends. He knows he has friends. He loves all the teachers at school. And this is new thing with him. This isnt something thats been happening since September. This all of a sudden just happened within the last few weeks. Marcia Murchison: There they go. See you later alligator. Bye bye. Christian: (crying) Marcia Murchison: Okay, hold onto my hand, its okay, its okay. Christians father: Okay, you are going to go to school. How do you feel to be going to school, Poppy? Christian: Good. Marcia Murchison: Christian is doing a beautiful job in school, wouldnt you say? Christians mother: I would say he has changed tremendously. Marcia Murchison: He comes in in the mornings, and hes very very happy. And he doesnt want to go home sometimes. He comes in the classroom in the mornings very happy with a smile on his face, puts everything away, goes right over. Hes always willing to participate in our circle time and the different activities. Playground, he is very active and has many friends that he plays basketball with. Child: Want some more? Christian: No. No. Thats funny. Buenos Diaz. Buenos Diaz. Como estas? Muy bien, muy bien. Como estas? Bien, bien. Maria Perez: Hi my name is Maria Perez, and Im a home-school liaison for Head Start in the elementary school. And four months ago we had an appointment for a meeting with Sarah and Fabino, in reference to Christian and how he was doing in the classroom. Fabino Idaraga: First of all I want to thank everybody for being here for Christian and the problem we were having. I am very happy, thank you. Christian, about six months ago, thank god, he has changed completely. He is very happy, he wants to go to school, and that makes me feel really good. Sara Idaraga: Ive noticed a difference. He didnt like to go. Now he loves his teacher and his friends in school. I leave him, and I go home crying. Before my heart, soul would fall apart. Now I feel more sure that my son stays happy. Maria Perez: I did a home visit, and I visited the parents. I understood their concern, and Im sure Marcia did too, because shes an educator, but I think they felt more comfortable speaking to me. I had met them before, and I had met them during the initial visit when he started school, and I kept in contact with them. They felt more comfortable with me in their language also. So I came and spoke to Marcia on the parents feelings about whats happening and their concerns. Marcia Murchison: And that really gave me an insight to, because my communication with them was so limited. Well, from classroom teachers point of view, when a child has a problem, any problem, any child, its usually not one, usually not one thing thats causing the problem. And I really truly believe that in school there are things that happen with children that maybe as a teacher I dont even see happen that could bother them. There are things at home, parent going to work or not to work. Christian for example, was, I mean is, an only child. So it would be different for him than it would be for a family of four or five kids, you know. Maria Perez: And being an only child and coming into an environment where theres twenty kids and a teacher and an assistant, its a totally different world. Everything is different. Talking, for instance, the voices, how the teacher talks, how they carry their voice. Maybe one teacher will talk loud, and hes not used to this. And the other one is soft; its like a yo-yo effect. Marcia Murchison: I spoke to Ms. Idaraga on my first home visit about not that particular thing but about their family home situation. And I remember her saying that their home situation, since he was an only child, was a very, very calm, relaxed, stable, situation. Then you come to school with lots happening, chaotic, all these factors come in to play. Christian in particular is a very bright little boy too and considering the language barriers that we have tried to deal with this year, hes come a long way. Christian: Michelle. Oh my. Three girls, two boys. Thats bad. Marcia Murchison: The knowledge or reason why behavior is happening, or at least even just dwelling on a little bit in your own mind is what a teacher does, why why why is this happening when it wasnt before. Thinking about the new things that have happened in his life or whats changed in his life, thats what gave us the insight. I think it was a very complex thing because between the cultural differences, there were things happening in his life with his mother going back to work and these kinds of things that have made it more difficult for him in particular. Fabino Idaraga: One of the things was a change and he had never been to school. And then he finds that there are different cultures, and he has to integrate there, and thats a change in him. And he was used to only being at home with his mom that was one of the factors that was very important. Sara Idaraga: Me too, I think the change was that I have always been with him; Ive always taken care of him, and that was the first year that we were separated. Then it was like he was didnt like school, but after he started meeting and knowing the teacher and all his friends, he started adapting, and hes very happy. Now hes the first one to wake up in the morning, mommy, I want to come to school. And I love that. He wants to learn, and hes teaching me English. Christian: I miss my daddy and my mommy.
