I know that seems like something thats out there, but Im afraid that this range of typical is moving closer and closer toward what we used to say would be atypical. Do you know anything as parents and teachers we can do to counteract that? Ed: I think that one of the resources thats available, and again its back to this creating a team, is that in most communities, people have access to the public broadcasting service. And a lot of the programs, I mean a lot of the services that they offer through things like Ready to Learn include media literacy. How to help your children to deal with some of the kinds of things that they view. And I think that as teachers and caregivers in centers where were working, we need to get access to experts to help us understand what are the things that we can talk about and do that build on what we know and be very very helpful. And this whole notion of media literacy, I think is something, I know that I need to get more information into my work and to include that as a support. Sue: You know that its true that so many children today are victims or direct witnesses to violence either in homes or in communities, and I think in those situations, theyve learned violence as a strategy, as a particular problem solving strategy for dealing with problems and various situations. So its really key that we create safe havens in early childhood programs, and that we build resilience in those children. And the way we do that particularly is really through teams of adults who are specialists in working to support young children, to help them develop more appropriate problem solving strategies. I think this is where a program like Head Start is particularly valuable because it has a comprehensive approach to children. It included mental health and social services and parent involvement as components, and not every program unfortunately has that. But if youre dealing with children who are either victims or witnesses to direct violence, you have to draw on that expertise. Ed: You know Sue, a very good resource for dealing with the situations weve just mentioned is a new book published by the Early Childhood Council for Exceptional Children. Its called Practical Ideas for Addressing Challenging Behaviors. And you can order this through the NAEYC web site or get information through the RISE web site, but I think this is a really good resource.
