Is he still sleepin? Huh? Ohhhh. Narrator: Getting out of bed in the morning, moving from one room to another at school. Teacher: (singing) Clean up clean up clean up this room. Narrator: Cleaning up between activities. Kelly Gain: Do you want mommy to get it? Its probably pretty warm Narrator: Getting breakfast. Getting ready to go outside. Kelly Gain: Do you wanna go outside too? Well we have to get dressed. Narrator: Getting dressed. Getting along. Transitions times can be the most trying times of the day. Either too much or too little stimulation for children. Angie Gonzolez: We ask the children to help us, help themselves. So what you saw, the kids were putting their own jackets on, we taught them a special little trick on how to flip their own jackets. Then not only does it help them help themselves, but it helps us as teachers. Teacher: All right. Its ready for you to flip. Can I help you zip? Angie Gonzolez: When we have 22 kids in a classroom that we have to assist to get ready to go outside, once they are all set, we ask them to sit in their lockers. And if you remember, the lockers are in an L-shape, and they face the classroom. So its just a little confined space for them to wait and while theyre sitting, we sing songs with them, we do finger plays with them, so they dont get easily bored either. Two minutes is short for us, but two minutes is an eternity for a three year old to wait for us the help other children zip up. Teacher: There you go, Emily. Youre all set. Narrator: At home, as at school, routine is an important concept. It helps tell us how to support children and guide their behavior during transitions. For three-year-old Andrew and two year old Alex, transitions are sometimes smooth. Mom: Is he not quite awake? There you go, now you can stretch. Narrator: And sometimes (it is) not so smooth. Andrew: I dont wanna do it. Mom: You dont want to dress. Do you want mommy to help you? Andrew: No! Kelly Gain: Do you want to stay in your pajamas all day? Kelly Gain: It takes them awhile to get dressed, but he needs to learn how to do it, you know hes gonna be four and you know, I know quite a few four year olds that dont know how to dress themselves. I guess its me as a parent, Im like, you need to know how to do this. Kelly Gain: Mommys gonna go get your clothes. Come on. Alex: No. Kelly Gain: Come on. Alex: No. Kelly Gain: Come one Alex. Kelly Gain: Did you get them? Alex is only two, but he can do certain things like going to get his shoes. He knows where they are, if I tell him to put his shoes up, he knows where to put them. He knows where to find them in the morning. Narrator: Breakfast time is a chance for Andrews mom to let him pitch in. Kelly Gain: Press the button. Now were gonna let it cook. Kelly Gain: He likes to have a certain amount of I guess control is what it is. Little kids like to be able to, I mean you cant have total control, but if they have a little bit of control, I think it makes them feel like a little bit more independent. I mean not that they would look at themselves as an independent person because I dont know if they understand that yet. But it seems like they have more control of what theyre doing, like mommy isnt always saying do this, do that, I have to do it for you. Kelly Gain: Is it still cooking? Andrew: Uh-huh. Narrator: Teachers in Mobile, Alabama, who have to move their preschoolers down a long hallway, consider this transition time an important part of their day. Linda Ryall: We feel that, well we know that transitions make or break the day with young children. If the transitions arent smooth, then the rest of the day probably wont be either. And most teachers, through experience learn that need to have what we call a bag of tricks to use. We have a lot of resources here, and those resources are wonderful, but they also present challenges, more transitions. Linda Ryall: We dont want anybody to know were in the hall. So what do we have to do? Tiptoe. Linda Ryall: Some teachers had as many as 22 transitions during the day, most of us were in the 11-12, which is still a lot. So we wanted to make sure that we all had some ideas that we could use to keep the children engaged during those transitions PAGE HYPERLINK "URL: http://www.thecol.org/guide/" URL: http://www.thecol.org/guide/ ""EP&?
